Shirley Merriam Cornish, 86, a resident of White Lake and Old Forge, NY passed away on September 28, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Born on September 29, 1936 in Oneida, NY to George Merriam Jr. and Dorothy Gamble Merriam.

Shirley spent her working years in the Health Care Community, which she truly loved.

Through the years, Shirley always stood up for issues she believed in and never left a stone unturned. Shirley was passionate about her love of the Adirondack Park and made it her mission to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife for the generations to come. In 2012, Shirley was awarded the Gateway to Wilderness Award as recognition of her years of advocacy for the park. Shirley's two favorite places to be were at her camp on White Lake, which she was so proud of, as well as Cape May, NJ where she once spent her winters.

Shirley is survived by her precious grandson Devan (Whitney) Cornish and daughter-in-law Jo Cornish, sister Dorothy Gaffey, great grandchildren Abree and Matty, niece Jennifer McManus and family, nephew Patrick Clark, cousins, and many dear friends, especially Linda Hart who epitomized the words true friend for 40 years and Lucky, her beloved cat and companion.

Shirley was predeceased by her dear son Mitchell Cornish, great grandson Aiden Mike, sister Elizabeth Merriam, parents George and Dorothy Merriam, grandparents George and Grace Merriam and Ernest and Mary Gamble.

In keeping with Shirley's wishes there will be no calling hours but a private service will be held in the spring for her family and friends.
