Sara
Dare
December 11, 2016
Sara Harriet Fox Dare, daughter of Edna Hogate Miller Fox and Theodore Jess Fox, Sr. of Pilesgrove, NJ, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2016. She was 73. Sara grew up on the family-operated dairy farm in Salem County, NJ, an experience that established Sara's core values. She had a purposeful work ethic, a fondness for nature, and always enjoyed a special love of ice cream.
Sara was a 1961 graduate of Woodstown High School. In 1962 she married Gene Harold Dare, Sr. on the grounds of her family's farm. Sara loved children, devoting her life to taking care of family. She was blessed with one son, Gene Harold Dare, Jr., who brought her extensive happiness. Sara took great joy in having a well-run household, known for its organization, spotlessness, and delicious meals. Her attentiveness to home and family helped her make spending time with children in her immediate family and the neighborhood—including nieces and nephews and children who visited her-- an ongoing priority.
Sara's love for her son and family brought her from her life-long home in Woodstown, NJ, to New York State and her eventual relocation to Westernville, NY in 2011. Sara was an accomplished outdoors woman; she knew how to hunt with a bow and fish for flounder in the Atlantic Ocean, and Westernville life brought her new opportunities to explore and find new pursuits. Most recently, Sara resided at Rome Memorial Hospital's Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF) where she received special treatment for Alzheimer's while still having the ability and nearness to receive visits and support from her family.
Sara was predeceased by her two older sisters Edna Fox Ollek and Bessie Fox Hannold. She is survived by her brother, Theodore Jess Fox II (Penelope) of Pilesgrove, NJ. She is survived by her spouse of 54 years, Gene Harold Dare, Sr., her son Gene Harold Dare, Jr. and his wife Catherine Palmer Dare, two grandchildren Paige Elizabeth Dare and Bryce Loren Dare all, of Westernville, NY, and her extended family: her brother-in-law, Jim Hannold of Florida and niece and nephews John Ollek of Franklinville, NJ, Lisa Calhoun (John) of Havertown, PA, Sonny Hannold (Gail) of Williamstown, NJ, Linda Hannold (Bill) of Franklinville, NJ, Jim Hannold of Elmer, NJ, Sherri Strobel (Andy) of Pilesgrove, NJ, and Ted Fox III (Vicki) of South Carolina.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, December 18 th at 3:00 PM at the Westernville Presbyterian Church, located at 9213 Main St, Westernville, NY, officiated by Pastor Jeffrey Courter. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM. Interment will be at Lawnside Cemetery in Woodstown, NJ in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Sara Dare to the Central New York Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 441 West Kirkpatrick Street, Syracuse, NY 13204. Arrangements are being coordinated by the John L. Matt Funeral Home, 3309 Oneida Street, Chadwicks, NY 13319. Please visit www.johnlmattfuneralhome.com to leave an online message of sympathy.
The family would like to thank Sara's caretakers on 3 East RHCF. Sara would want all those who knew her to smile at her memory and remember how she would often times say, there is always room for ice cream because it just slides right down.
