Obituary

Salvatore A. Rizzo, 82, a resident of the Masonic Care Community, entered into rest Thursday March 18, 2010 after a brief illness, with his loved ones by his side at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center after a brief illness. Salvatore was born the son of the late Anthony J. and Caroline Ruffo Rizzo, attended local schools and graduated T.R. Proctor High School class in 1947. During World War II Sal served aboard the U.S.S. ODIVA APD 71, in the Caribbean and was discharged in 1946. He was called back during the Korean conflict and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. stationed at Quantico, VA. Mr. Rizzo was honorably discharged in 1953, was then employed by Griffiss Air Force Base and later transferred to the U.S. Post Office after retiring with 34 years of service. On April 11, 1963 Sal was married his best buddy, Marcia Waszkiewicz, who died on August 7, 2008. Sal leaves a special niece and nephew Carol & Mike Clare, of Utica, who took very special care of him; and a niece and nephew Judith & James Calabrese, of Cicero, NY. Many thanks to great nephew Michael J. Clare; a great niece and nephew Kristin & Ted Scanlon and a great great nephew Colin Scanlon who brought much joy to Sal. Also a great niece Amanda Calabrese and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving are his in-laws, Thomas & Mary Ellen Morrissey of OH and AZ, and their children Kristin and Scott; Peggy & John Mascaro of Camillus, NY and their children Anne, Katie and Carrie. Sal was predeceased by his sister Carmela ( Mel ) and her husband Dominick Passalacqua. Salvatore's funeral mass will be held on Monday at 10 a.m., March 22, 2010 at St. John The Evangelist Church where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Upon conclusion of the military honors the family will greet visitors in the church vestibule. Arrangements are under the guidance of the John L. Matt Funeral Home, Chadwicks, NY. The family wishes to Thank Dr. Fred L. Talarico and the ICU staff at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. Also many thanks to the caregivers at the Manhattan residence of the Masonic Care Community.
