Obituary

Roger A. Swartfiguer, Jr., 58, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 26, 2011, after suffering a heart attack at his home in Pensacola, Fl. He was born July, 26, 1953 in New Hartford, NY, the son of the late Julie and Roger Swartfiguer. He was educated in New Hartford Schools and graduated in 1972. Roger enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country for 24 years until he retired in April of 2000. He spent a few years during his career out of the Navy attending Mohegan Community College and University of Florida, until he rejoined the Navy to complete his service. Roger had a wonderful career of 24 years in the Navy serving on several ships: the USS Canopus, Charleston, SC, the USS Orion, Sardenga, Italy, the USS Haleakala, Guam and again stateside on the USS LY Spear. He also taught Storekeeper "A " school in Meridian, MS and served with the SEALS Unit Two in Scotland and Germany, and finally to Pensacola where he decided to make his home. While in the Navy he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer and earned numerous awards and medals. Roger's love of his "hometown" team, the NY Yankees, left him forever bonded to his home state and he shared that passion with his dad and brother. That kept him busy along with his memberships in the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association. Roger was predeceased by his Mother in 1984 and his Dad on Nov 5, 2011. He will be sadly missed by his two sisters and a brother: Madeline Bruni of Clinton, Susan Eychner and her husband Bill of Whitesboro and Jeffery and his wife Kathleen of Rome. He also leaves two nieces, three nephews along with great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his former-wife and best friend Diana Jackson of Tulsa, OK and his Pensacola family, Kevin and Michelle Turner and their children, whom we are eternally grateful to. A memorial mass will be Saturday January 28,2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church,New Hartford, NY. Arrangements under the guidance of the John L. Matt Funeral Home, Chadwicks, NY.
