Obituary

Richard B. Piotrowski , of Presbyterian Home, 4290 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford passed away on Tuesday November 23 rd at St. Luke's/Faxton Hospital from complications following a stroke. He was 92.

Born in Utica on May 20, 1929 to Joseph and Helen Piotrowski, Richard spent much of his life in Central New York and attended the Whitesboro School system. In 1947 he married Julia Gawlik of Oriskany, and together they had 3 sons and a daughter. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 overseas in France and Germany during the Korean War. He married Donna Schultz of Rome in 1961 and together they had a son and a daughter.

In his early life, Richard developed a passion for his Polish heritage, and for Polish polka music, growing up at the former Mayfair Park in Marcy (now the Utica Mannerchor), that his father Joseph built and was the original proprietor of from 1934 to 1959. Working at the family business, he booked many of the top national polka bands of that era, along with many local bands for the countless functions that the Mayfair hosted. In the late 1960s he oversaw the forming of his sons' polka band, named the "Piotrowski Brothers Polka Brass ", featuring some of the area's finest polka musicians playing in hundreds of venues in many states over the course of a decade. Later in the 1970s he and his wife Donna were instrumental in forming and leading the United Polka League of Central New York. Besides his love of music, he was also active in the New York Mills Little League, managing teams from St. Mary's and Utica Air Freight for many years. He was also a big fan of New York Mills varsity basketball in the 70s and 80s, and a diehard New York Giants fan. He was employed as an assemblyman for GE/Radio Receiver Division on Bleecker St. for over 25 years and retired in 1987.

Richard is pre-deceased by father and mother Joseph and Helen Piotrowski, brothers Edmund and Ramon Piotrowski, wife Julia, and his son Daniel. Surviving family members include son Alan, of Jacksonville, Fl., son Richard (Lauri), of Orlando, Fl., daughter Charmayne (James) Talerico, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., son David of Myrtle Beach, S.C., daughter Deanna Gifune of Rome, and Donna Piotrowski of Rome.
