Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" J. Mackey,  80, of Rome, departed this life, peacefully surrounded by the love of his family, on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the Abraham House in Rome, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Greig, NY, on March 21, 1945, the son of the late Bernard Mackey and Julia Bauer Grosso and received his education in Rome Schools. Larry was a truck driver, for many years, retiring in 2011 from GTL Transport of Suffolk, VA.

On December 31,1991, in Wisconsin, he was united in marriage to Louise Hicks. She passed away in February 2021.

He always loved music. In his younger days, he traveled on the road playing lead guitar in a few different bands. Over the years, he accumulated many guitars and has written many songs, with the last song being, "When I leave this world", he wrote and recorded with his long time friend, Don Leo. They had their weekly jam session up until he could no longer hold his guitar.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Crane and her husband, Greg, of Frankfort; two sons, Larry Mackey, of Frankfort and Joe Mackey and his wife, Audrey, of Rome; and their mother, the former Mickey Caruso. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Nicole Mackey, of Frankfort, Joey  (Valerie) Mackey, of New Hartford and Garrett Crane, of Frankfort; one great-granddaughter, Navy Cherie Mackey; two stepsons, Greg (Lisa) Hicks and Chad (Kerri) Hicks, of Green Bay, WI and their children; and many friends and relatives near and far.

He was predeceased by his step-daughter, Jennie Hicks Keyser.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the nurses and staff from Hospice and the Rome Abraham House for the wonderful care and compassion.

Those wishing to donate, in Larry's memory, please consider the Abraham House, 417 N. Washington St., Rome, NY 13440 or Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413.
