John S.
Zumpano, Sr.
February 21, 2023
John S. Zumpano, Sr., peacefully joined his wife and his Lord Feb 21, a few weeks before his 97th birthday. John was the son of Salvatore and Eusebbia Levato Zumpano and, at eighteen, served our country in World War II, stationed in Italy. Upon his return, he met his soul mate, Jeanette E. Vitagliano. They married, brought ten children into the world, and celebrated a mutual love for over 70 years, until her death in 2020.
After graduating from Utica College in 1948, John began a career in insurance, working with his uncle in the A.S. Agency. In 1965, he joined his wife in taking over her father's business, A. Vitagliano & Co., which still operates as AVICO Distributing and Broad St. Cash and Carry. His wife managed the inside while "Johnny Zump" called on many restaurants, pizzerias, mom, and pop grocery stores and institutions until he was over 90! They were his friends. They grew the business thirty-five-fold in the twenty-five years they owned it until the third generation acquired it and still operate it today, 95 years after it was started.
John had a deep humble catholic faith and instilled it in his children who survived him; John S., Zumpano, Jr. (Wilma), Sylvia T. Zumpano, Gina Z. McFarland, RPh. (Jay), Salvatore P. Zumpano (Ann), Dr. Antonio V. Zumpano (Patty), Paul M. Zumpano (Lauren), Dr. James J. Zumpano (Joyce), Robert F. Zumpano, Thomas J. Zumpano (Robin), and David J. Zumpano, Esq. (Christine). He is also survived by 35 grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren and 100+ nieces and nephews spanning four generations. He is predeceased by his eleven siblings, his wife's siblings and many other family members.
Much gratitude to his caregivers, Trista Reynolds, Heidi Broadbent, Kiarra Premo, and Shannon Kent, who enabled him to live his full life mentally and physically at home, right up to his passing.
