Obituary

John C. Terpstra passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, at the Presbyterian Nursing Home, with his family by his side. He was born Catrinus Terpstra on April 28, 1936, in Gaastmeer, Netherlands, the beloved son of Martin and Susie (Eckhof) Terpstra.

John lived through the hardships of World War II and, at age 13, immigrated with his parents, brother, and two sisters to Utica, New York, via Canada. Proud to become an American citizen, he later served honorably in the United States Army.

A hardworking man, John held many jobs before establishing a long career with Chicago Pneumatic, where he served in multiple roles until the company relocated from Utica.

John had a venturesome spirit and a deep passion for life. He loved fishing, traveling, and watching sports—especially the New York Yankees, soccer, and football. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. In retirement, he could often be found having breakfast with friends or visiting the casino, where he enjoyed the atmosphere and reconnecting with former coworkers.

He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Susie Terpstra; his beloved wife of 37 years, Joan Terpstra; his former wife and mother of his two children, Beatrice M. Terpstra; his brother, Charles Terpstra; his twin sister, Ann Boris; and brothers-in-law William Boris, Donald LaPier, and Charles T. Facchini. He is also predeceased by his in-laws, Lillian and Robert Magadieu.

John is survived by his loving children: Christina (Thomas) Weigand, Wendy (John) Firsching, Robert (Yvonne) Parsons, Doreen Jordan, and Colleen (Jim) Marble. He was a proud grandfather to Justin, Sean, Morgan, Quintin, Jennifer, Todd, Christopher, Joshua, Keith, Sean, Arua, and Narjl, and a cherished great-grandfather to Fox, Rosalie, Violet, and Ace—with another great-grandchild expected in October 2025.

He also leaves behind his sister, Gail LaPier; sisters-in-law Joyce Terpstra and Gail Facchini; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were an important part of his life.

John's memory will be treasured by all who knew him—especially for the deep love and devotion he shared with his late wife, Joan. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Hammertoe Jeanty, Nurse Practitioner Kim Buckas, and the compassionate staff at Presbyterian Nursing Home for their attentive care and support.

In keeping with John's wishes, there will be no public services. A private burial will be held at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery.

John will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
