Obituary

Mrs. Helen K. Squier, 96 (wife of the late Dr.Herbert N. Squier) died peacefully at the Masonic Care Community Wednesday September 03,2008.Prior to her residence there,she resided at Acacia Village Retirement Community from 1995 to 2007 and Oxford Towne Apartments in New Hartford from 1975 to 1994. In 1911, Helen Louise Klausner was born, the daughter of the late Otto B. and Jennie Yeoman Klausner. A graduate of U.F.A., she received her Nursing Degree from St. Luke's School of Nursing. Mrs. Squier later returned to St. Luke's as a Nursing Instructor after graduating with a Bachelor's Degree from Columbia University. Throughout her life she maintained strong bonds with her nursing students. While she was in college, Mrs. Squier began what became an outstanding collection of Wedgwood. A term paper which she wrote on the subject later found its way as a book, into the library of the Wedgwood Company's American headquarters in New York, where it is today. In 1943 she married Dr. Herbert N . Squier, a widely known Utica surgeon and one of the founders of Blue Cross and the Utica Hospital Plan. He also taught with Helen in addition to being a practicing physician at St. Luke's Hospital. He retired in 1957 and they moved to Duxbury, MA. where they remained until Dr. Squier's death in 1963. In 1964 Helen became the director of Nursing Service at the New England Women and Children's Hospital, and later the director of Nursing at Jewish Memorial Hospital both located in Boston. Previously, she was the In-service Coordinator at South Shore Hospital and the educational Director at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Upon her retirement, she returned to Utica area. She is survived by a great-nephew, John Williams Brown, and many friends. She is pre-deceased by Her sister Susan E. Klausner Williams who died in 1951. In accordance to Helen's wishes, there will be no Visitation or Funeral Services. A private interment will be in the Squier family plot at Mt. Albion Cemetery, Albion, NY Arrangements under the guidance of John L. Matt, J r. Funeral Director - F. W.
