Douglas Robert
Hobin
May 8, 2020
Mr. Douglas Robert Hobin, 78, of New Hartford, NY and formerly of Utica departed this life on Friday May 8, 2020 at the Presbyterian Home after a long illness.
He was born in Utica,NY the son of the late Robert and Margaret Ignash Hobin . He was predeceased by two brothers.
Doug was a Utica boy all his life. Upon his return from the service, he worked at several local businesses. He ultimately settled into a job at the Utica post office, which he eventually retired from after many years of distinguished service.
Doug knew God and was raised in the Episcopalian faith.
Doug had several interests. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed sharing his photos with friends. As a consummate fan of classic movies, tv and music, he knew quite a bit of trivia and enjoyed many conversations and debates on those topics. Travel was another of Doug's passions, both touring our great land and several international destinations. Also, the joy of running was not lost on him as evidenced by his many race bibs including several boilermaker ones.
Awhile before his retirement, Doug was adopted by a stray cat he fondly named "Kitty". The close bond they developed led Doug to devote the remainder of his life to the care of the stray and feral cat community in West Utica, in and around the Plant St area. He fed them, cared for them and paid for needed vet care for the kitties out of his own pocket. He practiced trap/neuter/release and got several of the cats adopted. Doug was referred to as the cat man by the neighborhood and some folks even dropped off bags of food to help out. He truly loved those cats and it would be his fervent wish that people would help stray pets and feral animals as it is not their fault they're out there. That little fur ball crying on your porch may change your life for the better just like Doug.
Thank you to Dr Hart; the staff of the Presbyterian home; the Elm unit; his nurses Marsha, Cindy, Marilyn, Diane and Donna; and so many wonderful aides too numerous to count. Your outstanding care, concern and friendship shown to Doug during his illness was amazing and heartwarming. It will never be forgotten.
Please consider Hope House and earmark your donation for pet food. After their guests have their meal, they can take food home for their pets as they are in need also.
As per the the Covid -19 Pandemic there are no calling hours or public services.
Doug will be laid to rest at his family plot at Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors.
