Bernice Sheedy
Joseph
November 20, 1934 – December 27, 2021
Bernice Sheedy Joseph passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 27, 2021 at her home in New Hartford, with her son, Michael, by her side.
Bernice was born at St Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers on November 20, 1934 and received her education in St. Mary's School and Gorton High School. Upon graduation, Bernice worked at Dellwood Dairy as a bookkeeper. She was part of a loving family of 6 and was especially close with her sister Arleen. On May 3rd 1958, Bernice married her beloved Peter Joseph, also of Yonkers. Peter was an electronics technician at Con Edison for 4 decades and an active Army veteran having served in Korea and Okinawa.
Bernice and Peter became the proud parents of two children, Michael William and Nancy Marie. She actively participated in the education, sports and activities of her children often from behind the scenes. Bernice was devoted to her husband, her kids and grandkids, to the congregation of St Mary's, and to supporting the veterans causes her husband championed. Bernice volunteered at St Mary's school, wrangling order in the playground until taking a job as an office manager for C.B. Post Insurance in Yonkers. However, work was always secondary to family for Bernice. A lifelong member of the Yonkers community, Bernice enjoyed planning family dinners, travelling with her husband, visiting other relatives and friends, volunteering at the CWV and American Legion veteran's events with her husband, and perfecting her stew recipe. Bernice was an avid reader and a frequent visitor to used book sales around Westchester and Oneida counties
Bernice was familiar with New Hartford, after spending 14 years watching her grandson, William's, soccer games, swim meets, and Marching Band competitions. After suffering a series of health scares three years ago, Bernice moved to a new house in New Hartford, and was often seen on her ramp and deck on Bonnie Ave by the local walkers. She spent her last years here, being cared for by Michael, Tammi, Hasiba, and Ramiza.
Bernice is survived by her son Michael and his family, Janet and son William Peter of New Hartford; daughter Nancy Parker and her family: Dean and daughters Olivia Skye and Sophia Noelle of Apex, NC; brother-in-law Roy and children Mitchell, Andrew John and Meredith and their spouses and children of the Yonkers area. Bernice was pre-deceased by her husband Peter of 53 years, sister Arleen Sheedy McLaughlin, Arleen's son, Detective Sgt. Roy Douglas, her brother John (Jack) Sheedy, brother Ronald (Ronnie) Sheedy, sister-in-law Doris (Joseph) Reno, sister-in-law Agnes (Joseph) Parsons, and nephew Mark Parsons.
Bernice was beautiful inside and out. She was loved and will be missed by her family and friends but we are all also glad that she is now reunited with her soulmate, Peter, and her "partner in crime" and sister, Arleen. She had a beautiful life. Now she is free!
